This funding supports exploratory research projects employing invasive neural recording and stimulation technologies in the human brain to investigate how neuronal activity in spatially organized networks underlies sensations, perceptions, emotions, thoughts, memories, and behaviors. Projects should focus on feasibility and early-stage development, guided by theoretical and quantitative models. Recipients will join an NIH-coordinated consortium to establish standards, address neuroethical issues, and share data with the scientific community.
Eligible applicants include state and local governments, nonprofits (with and without 501(c)(3) status), small businesses, public housing authorities, institutions of higher education, tribal organizations, for-profit organizations, and independent school districts within the United States.
