Supports investigator-initiated clinical trials requiring enhanced oversight and mechanistic studies to promote understanding of human diseases and therapeutic development. Funding covers trials up to 5 years, with possible extensions to 6 or 7 years. Only one clinical trial may be proposed per application, which undergoes NIH peer review.
Eligible applicants include state and local governments, various types of educational institutions, nonprofits, for-profit organizations, tribal governments, and foreign organizations. Both domestic and non-domestic entities may apply, including foreign components of U.S. organizations.
