This funding opportunity supports highly innovative mechanistic research to accelerate precision probiotic therapies by characterizing person-specific features that affect probiotic responses. Funded projects will use rigorous mechanistic studies in relevant animal models or human subjects to identify subgroups of probiotic responders and develop strategies to overcome barriers caused by human heterogeneity. Applications must include supportive preliminary data and focus on testing causality or predictability of host biological patterns correlated with probiotic usage.
