Supports systematic, theory-driven research in all sub-fields of cultural anthropology using diverse methodologies such as ethnographic fieldwork, surveys, computational modeling, and archival research. The program funds projects that produce generalizable, empirically grounded findings to build a robust anthropological science of human society and culture. Applied research without theory advancement is not supported.
Eligible applicants include U.S.-based non-profit non-academic organizations associated with research or education, accredited U.S. institutions of higher education, and federally recognized American Indian or Alaska Native tribes.
