The FLAMES award funds master and doctoral students conducting wildland fire research that supplements their thesis or dissertation. Funded projects must address management- or policy-relevant questions in fuels management, fire environment, emissions, fire effects, or human dimensions. Awardees gain practical experience with fire practitioners, participate in virtual and in-person cohort activities, and produce management-relevant products. Proposals are due September 17, 2026.
Eligible applicants are current master and doctoral students enrolled at US colleges or universities. Nonprofits with 501(c)(3) status, excluding institutions of higher education, are also eligible. Research must be related to wildland fire and approved by an academic advisor.
