This program provides matching grants to State agencies for land acquisition projects that conserve habitat for federally listed species associated with approved Habitat Conservation Plans. Funding supports fee simple acquisition or permanent conservation easements to promote species recovery and prevent extinction. Projects must involve voluntary conservation efforts within the United States and include commitments to long-term habitat management consistent with species conservation needs.
Only State and Territorial agencies with a cooperative agreement under section 6(c) of the ESA and annual renewal are eligible. Counties or conservation organizations may participate as subgrantees through a State agency. Projects must benefit federally listed species under an active section 10(a)(1
